Welcome to Happy Hour at Rabble Studio!
Happy hour is our monthly get together where we listen to interesting people, have fun and make new friends. All over a tasty beverage in our friendly and creative work home in Cardiff Bay.
This month we are joined by Helia Phoenix, founder of We Are Cardiff, the award winning blog that celebrates Cardiff's alternative culture, arts scene, and diverse communities. The site now has over 60,000 followers and is one of the top 20 most influential Twitter feeds in Wales, and has produced all sorts of content, from podcasts to documentary films. The site was set up in direct response to the negative media portrayal of the city in the late 2000s, to add positive voices and plurality to debates about the city. Helia is also a freelance journalist and writer who has written for the likes of Rolling Stone and the Guardian, although her most notable work to date is a biography about Lady Gaga. But she tries not to talk about that anymore.
For the past year, Helia has been enjoying reconnecting with nature after having a meltdown of sorts, and now tries to spend between 1-2 hours per day in Cardiff’s green spaces, either walking or running and being “mindful”, although she realises that word is gross. She’s also now the proud owner of a retired racing greyhound called Zelda (who will probably come along to the talk, fall asleep and snore through it).
Her talk is going to be on things she’s found or seen during the past year while out walking in Cardiff, mostly around the old docks area (aka Cardiff Bay). It will probably contain: some facts about the local area, a bit of history / tragedy / comedy, plus two bags of weed and a dead rat.... how intriguing!
May's happy hour is looking mighty all right!!!
